Full Description

The manor house of Radipole, now a farmhouse, is supposed to have been built by Richard Watkins who owned the manor in 1586-87; the initials RW are carved in stone over the porch. (2) The manor house known at The Old Manor is correctly described by authority 2, and the carved initials RW are still visible over the porch. Mr Leigh stated that the manor of Radipole was first recorded in 1291, 1539-40 and 1561, the latter being the date of the main part of the house which was restored in 1938. Believed to have associations with Cerne Abbey (ST 60 SE 41). Roman pottery has also been found in the garden by Mr. Leigh since 1938 but no further information concerning this and the monastic associations of the manor house was forthcoming. <2>

Radipole Old Manor (now a farmhouse) is a stone-built gabled building of roughly L-shaped plan with two storeys and attics. It was largely rebuilt by Richard Watkins circa 1590 but incorporates a fragment of an earlier building, of uncertain date, in the east wing. <3>

Old Manor (name confirmed) remains as described by RCHM <3>, and is in an excellent state of preservation. See ground photograph. <6>
