Full Description

A parish church, built in 1827-29 to replace the medieval church which was damaged by a storm in 1824 and subsequently partially demolished. The church was built in Gothic style by Strickland and comprises a west tower, nave, chancel and polygonal apse. <1-2>

Watching brief during excavation of geotechnical pits identified layers of redeposited clay, probably deliberately dumped to build up the ground level, and layers related to the construction of the church. Recovered post-medieval earthenware pottery and a clay pipe, consistent with materials anticipated in a topsoil on the margins of a village at the time of construction. <4>
