Full Description

Steam powered coal barge that sank off Ringstead in 1927. Position taken from (1)

The Minx was a steam powered coal barge, which had broken free from her moorings in Portland Harbour in November 1927. With no crew on board she drifted across Weymouth Bay and ran onto the rocks at Osmington Mills. Salvage was attempted but was rapidly given up, subsequently the local people ‘salvaged’, a considerable amount of coal, and local tradition says that the cottages in Osmington Mills were very warm and cosy that Christmas!(2)

The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
