Abstract/Summary

Ongoing work by Wessex Archaeology, including excavations and watching briefs in 1994, was conducted in connection with the expansion of the Thomas Hardye School and upgrading of its sports facilities. The work recorded an extensive landscape of Neolithic and Bronze Age features, including at least two barrow cemeteries and a range of associated land divisions and settlement features within the immediate vicinity of the school. Other excavations in the area have shown that archaeological features survive in an exceptional state and concentration along the entirety of the ridge. In June 1995, further work was undertaken in advance of the extension of existing buildings within the precincts of Thomas Hardye School. These excavations in two separate trenches, revealed a small number of prehistoric pits and ditches. Small quantities of pottery and flint were recovered.
