Abstract/Summary

An archaeological excavation of prehistoric settlement features on land at Poundbury West Industrial Estate, Dorchester, Dorset, was undertaken by AC Archaeology during the early summer 2005. Archaeological activity on the site included an unusual early Neolithic pit that contained a series of stakeholes in its base, as well as a large quantity of flake stone and other artefacts throughout its fill sequence. Middle Bronze Age activity was represented by two lengths of ditch at right angles and with a possible corner entrance. Again, a large quantity of artefacts was recovered, but there were no associated internal features. This document assesses the archaeological potential of the site and proposes a programme of post-excavation; this will lead to publication of the results in the Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society and deposition of finds and archive in Dorset County Museum.
