Abstract/Summary

‘The archaeological evaluation of land to the rear of Sherborne house…comprised the machine excavation of five trenches and three 2 x 1m hand-dug trial pits…A sequence of intercutting medieval pits of c. 13th century date and a possible associated mortar surface were present towards the northern boundary of the site. Other trenches contained pits and linear features of post-medieval and modern date. The trial pits in area C did not contain any archaeological features, although moderate quantities of finds of medieval and post-medieval date were recovered. It is likely that the main area of medieval activity is located in the northern zone of the site, adjacent to the Coldharbour Street frontage. It is considered that the southern extent of these deposits has been identified.’ Other areas may contain evidence for the formal gardens of Sherborne House.
