Abstract/Summary

Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological desk-based assessment of the site of the Terminus Building, Hengistbury Head, which was proposed for redevelopment. The area had been agricultural land until World War II, when it was incorporated into the radar installations on the site. After the war the area was used as a car park until the present car park and terminus building were built in the 1970s. The authors concluded that the potential for encountering archaeological features was moderately high, though any surviving remains were likely to survive only as features cut into the underlying natural layers. Erosion by traffic in the earlier car park was likely to have removed some shallower archaeological features and disturbed the upper parts of others.
