Abstract/Summary

Context One Archaeological Services undertook archaeological observations and recording between 9 November 2006 and 31 January 2007 on the site of the former gasworks. The site is within and close to the Saxon walls of the town, and it was thought that archaeological features or deposits associated with this or other settlement activity could be present and affected by the development, though it was considered very likely that the ground was much disturbed. Consequently, the local planning authority required archaeological observations and recording as a condition of granting planning permission for demolition of two buildings and remediation of the site (Planning Application 6/2006/005). No archaeological features or deposits were visible and no artefacts found during deep excavation operations. The ground consisted of modern overburden, and was heavily disturbed and contaminated to the depth of the excavations.
