Abstract/Summary

In accordance with a planning condition requiring a programme of archaeological work in advance of demolition of a bungalow and erection of a house, Bournemouth University was commissioned to carry out an archaeological evaluation. Two test pits were dug to determine the extent to which below-ground archaeological remains had been disturbed by the construction of the terrace on which the bungalow was situated. No features were identified, but quantities of material such as pottery and shale, of Iron Age/Romano-British date were recovered. The author concludes that the results of this evaluation confirm that this part of the island was used for the production of shale objects during the Iron Age/Romano-British period, and that the survival of below-ground archaeological remains in the area of the new building could not be ruled out.
