Abstract/Summary
'Following an evaluation conducted in 2003, an archaeological excavation by Wessex Archaeology was carried out in advance of development on land at the rear of 58 West Street, Corfe Castle. The site comprised an area of approximately 0.25ha…A rectangular area measuring approximately 35m x 20m was excavated to examine two ditches of medieval date that had been recorded in the evaluation. In addition a number of apparently natural features containing quantities of worked flint dating to the mesolithic period were recorded. One of the more significant finds was a so-called Portland Pick, a crudely made flint core tool characteristic of the mesolithic period in Dorset.
