Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was carried out on the site of a proposed housing development at Corfe Castle in February 1995. The evaluation comprised the excavation of two trenches using a mechanical excavator, followed by selected hand digging and recording of the exposed deposits. An earthwork in the south of the development zone could not be demonstrated to be of great antiquity, and was composed of a seemingly uniform accumulation of topsoil. A moderate amount of medieval pottery was recovered from two subsoil archaeological features in Trench 1, close to the existing East Street frontage. This part of the site may be regarded as having some potential for the survival of further in situ deposits of Medieval date.
