Abstract/Summary
An archaeological assesment of land to the rear of Lodden Bridge Farm, Gillingham has comprised a review of data held in the county Sites and Monuments Records, Dorchester County Record Office and Dorchester Reference Library. A detailed site inspection was also carried out. There are no previously recorded archaeological sites within the proposed development area, although a portion of the late medieval deer park at Gillingham lies within 20m of the site. Kings Court Palace, a scheduled monument, lies within 100m east of the site. It survives as a well defined earthwork, the remains of a royal palace built in 1132. The position of the development site also suggestst that there is the possibility of prehistoric settlement and funerary activity here.
