Abstract/Summary

'An archaeological evaluation for a proposed development at 40 High West Street and Stirling House, Dorchester, Dorset (SY 689909), was carried out by AC Archaeology during August 2009. The evaluation consisted of two trenches, one located at the rear of the garden at 40 High West Street, and one adjacent to the west end of Sterlng House in the adjoining car park. Trench 1, positioned at the rear of the garden revealed wholly modern deposits, including part of a wall foundation and brick pathway. Trench 2, positioned adjacent to the western wall of Sterling House revealed several phases of building remains comprising wall foundations and associated deposits, including some of possible medieval origin. Although sherds of Romano-British pottery were recovered, no pre-Medieval horizons were encountered.'
