Abstract/Summary

As a condition of obtaining Planning Permission for redevelopment an archaeological watching brief was carried out during groundworks for a dwelling on land to the rear of the Police Station, Castle Road, Portland (centred on NGR: SY 6848 7377). The watching brief was carried out in November 2004 by Niall Oakey, Heritage Consultant, on behalf of R.G & M.V Wylie. No evidence was found for activity pre-dating the 20th century. Early in that century some modification took place in order to create the artificial terrace upon which the Site and the police stables/garages stood. This comprised truncation of subsoil deposits and re-deposition and supplementation of topsoil. No significant archaeological deposits were recorded.
