Abstract/Summary

Three evaluation trenches were excavated though deep topsoil deposits. A medieval ditch and put are present in the northern part of the area of proposed development, and unstratified medieval pottery is heavily concentrated in this area; 16 sherds of late Saxon oxidised UGSD pottery were recovered from this area. It is concluded that these features are probably associated with a plot running south from Folly Mill Lane, and that medieval buildings and associated features are most likely to be present to the north of the APD. The southern part of the APD contained amorphous undated features producing very few finds but assumed to be of post-medieval date; this part of the APD may have been subject to long-term flooding. A combination of strip and record and watching brief recording is recommended in the event of any construction following the grant planning consent.
