SDO12838 - Black Barn Farm, Chalbury, Dorset: A Preliminary Archaeological Assessment

Report on archaeological assessment of c. 115 hectares of primarily agricultural land at Black Barn Farm, Chalbury, undertaken by Birmingham University Field Archaeological Unit in 1990, in advance of proposals to create a golf course. The assessment comprised non-intensive fieldwalking of all arable land, inspection of pasture, rapid recording of hedgerows and boundaries and a brief documentary search. A dense scatter of medieval pottery suggests the possible presence of a deserted part of the medieval village of Chalbury. Three other medieval pottery scatters were also found in the area. Four scatters of prehistoric flint were recorded. Black Barn Farm's hedges are notable for the large number of woodland species suggesting the fields may have been carved out of woodland. Several banks survive which may have originally been wood banks possibly defining old wood compartments.
