Abstract/Summary
‘The following is a desktop assessment with the results of a subsequent field evaluation of an area in which construction of a new dwelling over the position of the existing garage to the east of Littlecot is proposed. The information underlying this Assessment of Significance is derived principally through study of data in the Dorset Historic Environment Record and a site inspection in November 2011, with a second section of the report describing the results of field evaluation trenching undertaken in January 2012 to implement proposals for trenching recommended in the initial desktop appraisal.
The area was considered to be of high archaeological potential, with possible survival of remains of prehistoric or Iron Age, but predominantly Roman date. Recommendations were made in the desktop assessment that trial trenching should be undertaken, with proposals for subsequent work should this be deemed appropriate. Trial trenching in the event was negative, and it is clear that the Roman site to the immediate north of the area of proposed development does not extend to the area of proposed development APD), and no remains of earlier or later period were present. ‘
