Abstract/Summary

In August 1997, an archaeological field evaluation was carried out on the proposed site of a lake at West Stafford, Dorset. The general area had previously been the subject of a number of similar planning proposals, and this evaluation assessed a specific area near Stafford House that would be directly affected by the latest scheme. The evaluation comprised four mechanically-excavated trenches. The results of the evaluation indicate that deep peaty soil profiles exist over much of the area in question, in places affected by 19th century land management, but in general showing little signs of disturbance. The western edge of the proposed development was characterised by a slightly raised area of 19th century infill, and the south-eastern edge by shallower profiles directly overlying undisturbed natural deposits. No evidence was found for the presence of archaeological deposits or features, and no archaeological artefacts of medieval or earlier date were recovered from the trenches.
