Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation, consisting of three trial trenches, was undertaken by AC archaeology Ltd on land at The Barracks, Bridport Road, Dorchester, Dorset, in July 2013. The trial pits were positioned where the foundations and services of a proposed mews flat development will be situated. These locations were just south and west of previous finds of Roman features, burials and artefacts. Trial Pit 1 exposed natural chalk bedrock underneath the modern car park surface and made ground. In Trial Pit 2, much of the excavated area was taken up by a relatively modern service trench with a cast iron pipe, although truncated chalk bedrock was also visible. In Trial Pit 3, up to 0.70m of 19th or early 20th century make up deposits were revealed underneath the modern car park surface and made ground.
