Abstract/Summary

Continued excavation at Toller Porcorum by Bournemouth University Department of Conservation Sciences has revealed six phases of site activity. Phase 1 comprised two ditches, probably representing land division in the twelfth- or thireenth century. Phase 2 centred on a thirteenth or fourteenth century terraced-up house platform (platform B). Phase 3 comprised a post-medieval building constructed on platform A, and ditches and banks on the eastern side of the stream. The phase 3 building on Platform A was demolished and robbed of masonry in Phase 4 and a large pit and a shallow curvilinear gulley were dug within the remains of the building. Late infilling of the upper part of the pit took place in Phase 5, and finds here included late nineteenth- and early twentieth century pottery and glass. Phase 5 also saw emplacement of two chalk drains (one either side of the stream) to improve drainage in fields to the south. Continued attempts at drainage in phase 6 included the laying of a plastic drain pipe.
