Abstract/Summary

A detailed gradiometer survey was conducted over land off Lyndhurst Road, near Christchurch, Dorset. The project was commissioned by Turley Associates on behalf of Burry & Knight with the aim of establishing the presence, or otherwise, and nature of detectable archaeological features on the site ahead of a proposed development. The site comprises a pasture field to the south of Lyndhurst Road, approximately 3.75km northeast of Christchurch. The gradiometer survey covered 1.4ha and has demonstrated the presence of anomalies of probable and possible archaeological interest within the survey area, along with several regions of increased magnetic response. The gradiometer survey was successful in identifying anomalies of probable and possible archaeological interest, along with regions of increased magnetic response and ferrous anomalies. One curvilinear ditch-like anomaly was identified; it is possible that this represents a former field boundary. Ploughing trends are also present in the data along with other weak linear and curvilinear trends of unclear origin. Elsewhere within the survey area, weak linear and curvilinear trends are apparent, along with isolated pit-like anomalies.
