Abstract/Summary

‘AOC Archaeology were commissioned by Dorset County Council to undertake a Level 4 Historic Building Recording exercise of Pamphill Church of England First School prior to its refurbishment and repair. The main part of the building including the south end of the main school room and the east and west wings were built in 1698 as almshouses with money bequeathed by Roger Gillingham. An extension was added to the north of the central room in the early 20th century and the building has undergone various changes in response to its use as a school. The layout of the former almshouses is still, however, discernible from the present structure and the roof structure of the 17th century building survives to a good quality. The historic building recording involved a full measured survey of the buildings including plan, elevations, sections and a full photographic survey. The survey was undertaken between the 28th and 31st July 2008.’
