Abstract/Summary
‘This report outlines the details of an archaeological evaluation undertaken for Ellis and Partners Ltd on behalf of their client Andy Brown at ‘the Fountain’, 1-3 High Street, Christchurch, Dorset. A total of three trenches, each measuring 1m x 3m, were excavated by mechanical excavator under archaeological supervision.
Archaeological features and deposits were identified in each trench, variously containing pottery provisionally dated to the medieval period. Two of the features were interpreted as intercutting boundary ditches representing the historical boundary between nos. 3 and 5 High Street. Two of the features were very large and only partially exposed in the trenches and it could not be determined whether these were pits or ditches, while a smaller feature was considered to be a pit although this too was only partially exposed.
It has been concluded that there is a high potential for significant archaeological deposits and features to be present within the proposed development area. It is anticipated therefore that, depending on the scope and extent of the development groundworks, development of the site has the potential to disturb surviving archaeological deposits.’
