Title | Land at Worgret Road, Wareham, Dorset, Archaeological Evaluation |
Author/Originator | Monteith, J |
Date/Year | 2011 |
Abstract/Summary
The evaluation was commissioned by Bloor Homes prior to development of the site and following a geophysical survey. Eight trenches were excavated and revealed that the majority of the anomalies identified by the geophysics were features associated with a First World War army training camp constructed on the site in 1914. these features included red brick drainage features and steel/iron reinforcing bars. A substantial ditch undated was identified in three trenches and one base-sherd of black sandy ceramic was recovered from the uppermost layer, dating between mid 2nd century to 4th century AD. 4 pieces of struck flint were recovered from the same layer. The evaluation suggests that the majority of geophysical anomalies were the result of modern farming and drainage as well as from the First World War camp.
