Abstract/Summary

Observations and recording by Terrain Archaeology in 2011 during groundworks for a new car park revealed more detail of a known early to middle Romano-British farmstead. Evidence dating the farmstead boundary ditch to the mid-1st century AD was recovered. There was little evidence for significant activity between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. A Roman T-shaped corn drier or malting floor was recorded; it could not be dated more precisely, but appeared to have been disused and levelled in the Late Roman period. Other late Roman remains included part of the footings of a building, a large hollow or working area filled with rubble, and a truncated urned cremation burial of 3rd-century AD date. Small quantities of South East Dorset Orange Wiped Ware in the pottery assemblage suggest that the site continued in use into the late 4th and early 5th century AD.
