Abstract/Summary

An archaeological excavation was carried out in the south eastern corner of the former bowling green in the Borough Gardens, Dorchester. An early soil possibly a remnant of an earlier brown earth forest soil was found in a hollow in the natural chalk. This had been disturbed by 18th/19th century activity but sealed a prehistoric undated ditch. The uppermost fills contained knapping waste of possible Middle-Late Bronze Age date. A series of 19th century garden features and service trenches were recorded including a series of pits for a line of trees or shrubs planted along the toe of the former spread bank of the 18th century West Walks.
