Abstract/Summary

‘Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of the proposed site of new tennis courts on the site of the former bowling green in the Borough Gardens, Dorchester. Two trenches were excavated which revealed the upper parts of three large parallel ditches running roughly N-S, which have been identified as part of the Roman town defences of Durnovaria. The remains of an old ground surface formerly preserved below the bank of the Roman defences or the earthworks of West Walks, was found in the southeastern part of the site. This soil layer sealed a prehistoric, possibly Neolithic, ditch.’
