Title | Car park to the west of Roman Town House, Dorchester, Dorset. An Archaeological Evaluation |
Author/Originator | Randall, C |
Date/Year | 2019 |
Abstract/Summary
Excavation of an L-shaped trial trench in the area of a proposed access ramp for a new entrance to the Roman Town House in the grounds of County Hall revealed a series of deposits relating to a cinder pathway to the east of a blocked opening in the wall adjacent to Colliton Walk. This was thought to be the remains of a 19th-century path or promenade. The pathway sat above a series of silty clays with chalk as a frequent component, and consistent with the known composition of the upper layer of the Roman bank/rampart, though the area may have been subject to landscaping in the 18/19th-century.
