Abstract/Summary

‘In May 2020, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation (of land) at Former ATS Euromaster, New Road, Shaftsbury, Dorset. One trench was excavated. The trench was excavated to investigate whether a stone-built tunnel, identified during development works 40m to the west, ran into and across the site. Although the tunnel was not encountered, the trench did contain three pits sealed by a deposit of dark earth. One pit remained undated but environmental evidence indicated a post-Roman date, the second produced late Saxon/earlier medieval pottery and the third produced post-medieval pottery. The post-medieval pit was located along the projected line of the stone tunnel and was only partially exposed along the south-western edge of the trench. Due to the depth of the trench (between 1.62 to 1.8m) this feature was not fully excavated and could be associated with the tunnel either as a possible exit pit or construction cut.’
