Abstract/Summary
South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) undertook a Heritage Assessment at Moigns Down Farm; to define ‘what is important and why’, within the farmstead to guide the owners in the designs for the future potential redevelopment of this abandoned farmstead. The cartographic, documentary and building evidence at the site suggests Moigns Down Farm has been occupied from at least the later medieval period onwards, with the fragmentary wall remains within the north elevation of B1 likely the earliest standing fabric. The site is a multi-phase complex, with an involved narrative, which is currently focused on the former threshing barn, B1, the farmhouse having been demolished in the 1970s. Archaeological
evidence within the downland surrounding the site provides the context of a historically rich and diverse landscape, quite at odds with the farmstead’s isolated character today. The ruined stone farm buildings and yards at Moigns Down Farm include some areas of archaeological interest and of architectural value, such as the stone pillars. The vernacular form of the slit vents in the elevations of B1 and the high-pitched roofline indicate a date for the main structure in the 16th or early 17th century, the former jointed-raised crucks largely rotted out of their wall-post sockets. The other ruined buildings and upstanding walls onsite are of value, as they provide the historic setting for the main barn but contain far more flexibility for change.
It is felt that development of the farmstead can be supported from a heritage perspective but should be sensitively considered at the design stage to avoid unnecessary historic pastiche and any scheme would be expected to consult with the local conservation officer and be developed with the aid of heritage professionals to ensure the suitability and sustainability of the farmstead for the future. Whilst little fabric remains intact on this farmstead, what does survive is of increased sensitivity and significance; it is considered historically important at a local level, and B1 is considered an undesignated heritage asset. In line with conservation principles, it is crucial to try and retain as much historic form and fabric as possible.
