Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by the West Dorset District Council's Planning Department, to undertake a preliminary desk-based assessment on the archaeological content of St Genevieve's Convent site in Dorchester. West Dorset District Council are seeking to prepare a Development Brief for the site and wish to ascertain the likely archaeological content of the area, so that any future proposals may take full account of that archaeological content. The commission of the assessment follows recommendations in current government guidance as set out in 'Planning Policy Guidance Note 16' (PPG 16; Dept of the Environment, Nov 1990); and it is in line with the West Dorset District Council's Policy CD17 (Areas of Archaeological Sensitivity) as set out in its Consultative Local Plan.
