Title | Rawlsbury Camp. A Geophysical Survey |
Author/Originator | Stewart, D |
Date/Year | 2013 |
Abstract/Summary
'Licensed by English Heritage under Section 42 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, a geophysical survey using magnetometry was carried out on the interior of the Iron Age hillfort at Rawlsbury during May 2013.
Clear evidence of round houses is limited but the magnetometry survey indicates a moderately high level of habitation in the Iron Age, with storage facilities sufficient for a significant local population.
Indications are that some ploughing may have occurred in the southern part, removing traces of shallow features and army manoeuvres have also left their mark. Nevertheless there is clear evidence of pits and trackways, with post-built storage structures and also a possible early enclosure.'
