Abstract/Summary
The report describes the results of archaeological evaluation excavation undertaken January 2001 at Channon’s Garage. Seven trenches were excavated by machine.
The evaluation demonstrated widespread survival of archaeological deposits of Roman date across the site at a depth of approximately 0.8m below ground level. This included Roman mortar and chalk floors and a culvert. These were sealed by Roman demolition deposits. The character of the artefacts, including window glass, tesserae, and fine ceramics, suggests the presence of domestic buildings of above average status. There are potential Roman street remains at the southern end of the site. Deposits, primarily post-medieval soils survive up to two metres thick above the Roman levels.
