Abstract/Summary

The site of the proposed Marshes End Park and Ride Scheme lies at the northern end of Holes Bay between the Upton Road and the A3049. No archaeological sites or findspots are known from the site but two, possibly three are known within 500 m of the site. The site is marginal land and was formerly heathland before enclosure and has been in agricultural land since. The eastern part of the site lies on recently reclaimed land. It is considered that the land was a marginal area, probably used for hunting and fishing throughout much of prehistory. The most likely activity that may have surviving evidence on or close to the site is saltworking. A number of sites of Iron Age and Roman date are known from the Poole harbour area but saltworking sites of earlier or later dates cannot be ruled out. Overall, it is considered that the site has a low archaeological potential.
