Abstract/Summary

An archaeological desk-based assessment has considered the archaeological potential of a c.3.5 hectare site near Chickerell, Weymouth which has been proposed for development by the Dorset Police Authority. Using existing archaeological and historical records the site cannot be shown to have any specific archaeological potential. Its position, close to a freshwater inlet on the west side of Radipole Lake may have afforded some settlement advantages to the location in the prehistoric and Romano-British period, but these may have been outweighed by the nature of heavy clay soils in the vicinity.
