Description

An archaeological excavation was carried out by AC archaeology for the Property Management Division, Dorset County Council, in advance of groundworks for the construction of new school accommodation. This followed on from an archaeological evaluation (Report no. ACW176/2/0). An area covering the footprint of the proposed new building was stripped of topsoil and the surfaces cleaned by hand. The archaeology so revealed was then sampled. Topsoil stripping was scheduled to start on 11th May 2009.[1] The client report is as yet unavailable (20/10/2009), however site visits by S. Wallis, Senior Archaeologist with Dorset County Council, noted the presence of intercutting quarry pits and deep circular features of a type frequently found in Shaftesbury and medieval in date. These are often interpreted as wells, although they may have been used in the tanning process. [2][3]
