Abstract/Summary
AC archaeology undertook archaeological investigations in 2009 on the former school playing fields and terraced lawns east of Barton Hill House, Shaftesbury, Dorset (NGR ST 86657 23206), prior to the construction of residential accommodation and associated parking for Shaftesbury School. The excavation revealed a large enclosure ditch containing 2nd to 4th century AD Romano-British pottery, possibly part of a settlement enclosure. A group of postholes, pits and two linear gullies contained late Saxon or early medieval pottery of 9th-11th centuries. These included further postholes, pits and ditches, in addition to an extensive area of quarrying. During the post-medieval period, the area seems to have reverted to garden.
