Description

Terrain Archaeology conducted a watching brief on the site of a development at Litton Cheney. The development comprised of a cut-and-filled platform approximately 75m by 100m for the wellsite and an access road running south from this platform to the edge of the field, when west along the field boundary to the south west corner of the field and on to the Wireless Transmitting Station. The access road groundworks consisted of machined topsoil stripping using a toothless grading bucket. Those for the wellsite consisted of topsoil stripping, then raised via cut-and-filling to produce a level platform. Observations were made only during the topsoil stripping. No features of archaeological significance were uncovered during the works, though a feature of interest was located. An irregular area of grey soil contained a significant amount of worked flint. The quantity and condition of these suggested a settlement of area of activity in the vicinity of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age.
