Summary

A house built around the middle of the 18th century with later shop front. The walls of the building are of colour-washed brick, and it has a slate roof. From 1780 the building housed an Academy set up by Unitarian minister Matthew Anstis (1740-1823).

Full Description

Mid 18th century house of three storeys, brick, with hipped slate roof. Five ranges of sash windows. Inserted modern shop front.(1)

From 1780 Matthew Anstis had his "Academy" here; hence the cottages to the rear are called Education Place (1). By 1823, there were only two pupils in the school (2).
