Full Description
SY57309122. A possible long barrow, partially visible on RAF 1947 AP, but now indistinct; some human bones recovered. <1>
A possible long barrow on Martin's Down. Woodward (1983) noted "a possible long barrow...partially visible on RAF 1947 AP, but now indistinct, some human bones recovered". No further details are given. The location of the suggested barrow is roughly midway between the northeastern end of the bank barrow SY 59 SE 27 and the northwestern end of the probable cursus SY 59 SE 85. The human remains are presumably those also mentioned by Bradley (1983) who noted that the bank barrow and the probable cursus "both were aligned on an area in which human bones have been found after ploughing", his source for the discovery of human remains also being Woodward. <1> <3>
An elongated mound lies to the north-east of the bank barrow on Long Barrow Hill. It is potentially the site of a Neolithic long barrow. It is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1948. <6>
