Summary

A ditch was observed running parallel with Weymouth Avenue and seven metres to the east during a watching brief during the construction of a new entrance to the new Dorchester South Station. This ditch was not excavated, but sections have been excavated across it to the north and to the south. It has been interpreted as a flanking ditch to the Roman road to Radipole, which is projected to run along the line of the present Weymouth Avenue.

Full Description

A ditch was observed running parallel with Weymouth Avenue and seven metres to the east during a watching brief during the construction of a new entrance to the new Dorchester South Station in 1986 (1). This ditch was 1.5m wide and was filled with light greyish-brown silty loam. This ditch was not excavated, but sections have been excavated across it to the north and to the south at the Stationmaster's House and the Police Station (2) (3). It has been interpreted as a flanking ditch to the Roman road to Radipole, which is projected to run along the line of the present Weymouth Avenue.
