Full Description

The remains of two buildings of possible 19th century date were found during the evaluation and excavation of the site of the former Fire Station , South Street, Bridport by Wessex Archaeology in 1995-96. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5)

Along the street frontage in the southern part of the site were found the remains of a mortared stone building with parts of at least four rooms with a small cellar in the northeast corner. The building was subsequently extended to the rear by a single room (1). This building can be identified as the Police Station depicted on the 1890 Ordnance Survey 25-inch map.

The other building lies in the northeastern part of the site, well behind the street frontage. In both the excavation trench/Evaluation Trench 1 and Evaluation Trench 2 an L-shaped mortared stone footing was revealed, suggesting the southwest and southeast corners of a building (1) (5). The Ordnance survey map evidence suggests they may both be part of a long building behind the street frontage running along the northern property of this site (2).
