Monument record MDO37279 - Post-medieval quarrying, Church Street, Christchurch

Please read our .

Summary

Archaeological excavation of footings, service runs and soakaways for a new vicarage in 2013 revealed extensive disturbance through opportunistic quarrying in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Gravel and/or clay was extracted by the digging of a series of large, globular pits, each partly back filled with soil from the next. Residual finds in the fillings of the pits indicated that early medieval layers had been distrubed by the quarrying. A notable find was a decorated corbel of twelfth-century date, likely to have originated from an early phase of the nearby Christchurch Priory church.
