Abstract/Summary

Archaeological excavation of footings, service runs and soak-aways for the new vicarage in Church Street in Christchurch during the Spring and early Summer of 2013, revealed that c. 75% of the site area had been comprehensively disturbed by opportunistic gravel/clay quarrying in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Though the fills of the quarry pits contained small quantities of medieval and Post-medieval pottery , no undisturbed in situ remains of those dates had survived. The report concludes that, with one exception, the straigraphic and artefactual results of the work do not warrant further analysis or publication. The exception is a decorated corbel of 12th century form that , though 'residual' within the upper fills of the quarry pits, probably derives from an early phase of the Priory church. This warrants typological and petrological analysis and publication as a short note in an appropriate journal.
