Full Description
Wreck event and documentary evidence:
1658 wreck of a Dutch cargo vessel stranded on the coast of Dorset, at either Portland or the Isle of Purbeck. She was a wooden sailing vessel en route from Alicante to Middelburg with a cargo of wool, aniseed, almonds, rice, gums, drugs and other cargo. The cargo was salvaged from the wreck by the people of Poole. There is some confusion over the exact location in which the wreck occured. The Dutch owners of the cargo stated that the ship was lost at Portland, while a letter written by George Skutt of Poole, who oversaw the salvage of the cargo, stated that the ship 'was by extremity of weather put on shore in the Isle of Purbeck'.
