Summary

A small rectilinear enclosure, possibly representing an Iron Age square barrow, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. There is a possible entrance in the north-west corner. It was mapped by English Heritage’s Knowlton Circles Project and was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

SU 0305 1068. A small rectilinear enclosure, possibly representing an Iron Age square barrow, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. The enclosure is defined by a single ditch 12.4m x 11m. It is associated with an extensive barrow cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group (SU 01 SW 52), and was formerly recorded as barrow 42 within this cemetery. <1-2>



SU 0309 1075. A small rectilinear enclosure, possibly representing an Iron Age square barrow, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. The enclosure is defined by a single ditch 15.2m x 14.6m, with gaps in its northern and western corners. It is associated with an extensive barrow cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group (SU 01 SW 52), and was formerly recorded as enclosure 43 within this cemetery. <1-3>

The enclosure is visible as a cropmark on a 1995 aerial photograph. <4>

It measures 18.5m long by 19.4m wide with a 2.4m wide external ditch and a probable entrance at its NW corner. The enclosure is likely to be prehistoric in origin, possibly Iron Age or Romano-British in date, although a later date is also possible.

The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
