Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief during re-surfacing and associated works along a stretch of the road through the village of Chideock, Dorset, was carried out by AC archaeology during the autumn 2002. A section of the Roman Road from Dorchester to Exeter had previously been identified within the village, beneath the existing carriageway. In most places, groundworks associated with the present scheme did not reach sufficient depths to reveal underlying deposit of pre-modern date. However, in one drainage trench an earlier cobbled surface was recorded, which is considered to be of 19th century date.
