Abstract/Summary

During the early part of June 1997, a number of geotechnical trenches were excavated in a propose development zone of Bridport. These trenches were subject to archaeological observation as part of a preliminary archaeological assessment of the area. The observations led to two main conclusions. Firstly it was established that deep recent made ground existed in area close to the existing course of the River Brit. Secondly it appeared that only a minimal accumulation of man-made deposits was present in areas further away from the river, the profiles exposed in these areas generally consisting of shallow garden soils directly overlying deep deposits of naturally occuring silt.
