Description

AC archaeology monitored the excavation of nine geotechnical trial trenches or testpits in the southwest part of Bridport in June 1997. The test pits were excavated by machine fitted with a toothed bucket, with the exception of TP3 and TP5, which were dug by hand. Test Pit TP1 was dug to a depth of 2.1m and revealed only modern made ground. This typically consisted of bands of gravelly silt containing occasional modern bricks in the upper 1.3m. Below this, was a layer of silty clay loam containing some preserved plant remains and a single sherd of post-medieval pottery.
