Abstract/Summary

‘Between 10th and 14th January 2022 Oxford Archaeology undertook a trial trench evaluation on the site of a proposed development at Broadmayne, Dorset. The works comprised the excavation of 12 trenches. Targeting the results of the geophysical survey, the evaluation identified remains of prehistoric and later origin. Although middle Neolithic pottery was recovered from a ditch and a colluvial deposit, the earliest feature identified on site was the remains of a middle Bronze Age pit. The most notable feature on site is a sizable D-shaped enclosure of suspected Iron Age date. A substantial assemblage of middle Neolithic to Bronze Age struck flint was recovered from the ditches that define the enclosure and alludes to earlier activity within the immediate vicinity. Evidence of later activity was limited to land management ditches and chalk extraction pits of suspected medieval or later date.’
